Heatherwood Close

St John's Road is a detached three bedroom house in Cosham. The house required modernising and re-planning to reflect the current lifestyle of the owners.

Heatherwood Close is a 1970s terraced house located in Wanstead. The property is in a prominent position as the end house of a small staggered terrace that forms a cul-de-sac.

The house is an archetypal example of a 1930s suburban house with its catslide roof, pebble dashed render and generously proportioned rooms.

The brief for MJH was to update the external appearance, replace the porch and provide extra space on teh first floor for a new en-suite.

MJH's proposal was to provide a contemporary design that focused on clean and crisp materials that emphasised the form of the house. The front porch is to be removed and replaced with an extended canopy that will improve the relationship of the entrance and front elevation. The first floor will be remodelled to include a new en-suite to the master bedroom. The en-suite will be located next to the existing bathroom, thereby benefitting from reduced service runs and maintaining the existing view at the rear. A new smooth render finish will replace the pebble dash to create a crisp and contemporary elevation.

The brief and budget for the project is relatively small, but it is a good example of how a house can be transformed by improving the appearance and adding value to the property.

The new extension will create the extra space the owners require and add a dynamic presence to the house.
