Khartoum Road is a typical early twentieth century detached house in Southampton. The house is one of the few properties not to have been altered on this established residential street.

Heatherwood Close is a 1970s terraced house located in Wanstead. The property is in a prominent position as the end house of a small staggered terrace that forms a cul-de-sac.


The brief for MJH was to increase the size of the combined kitchen and dining area and to reconfigure and extend the first floor to create larger bedrooms.

The owners have lived in the house for several decades but as they were both recently retired, they were spending more time at home and required the extra space for hobbies and entertaining family and friends. The kitchen is located at the rear and at the tip of a typical L-shaped plan. The space within the kitchen and dining area is restricted and only has a side entrance to the garden. Upstairs, two of the three bedroom were adequately sized but the third bedroom was sized for only a single bed.

MJH's proposal was to extend the rear of the house on both floors. The kitchen layout will be reorganised with an island taht leads into a dining and snug space. Bi fold doors will face onto the garden, thereby dramatically improving the relationship bewteen the house and the garden. In the summer this will enable the inside and outside to merge into one entity. On the upper floor, the second bedroom will be subdivided into a larger bathroom and ensuite. The switch will enable two bedrooms to be formed in the new extension taht are both able to fit a double bed and storage. To reflect the house's past and new beginnings, the extension will match the existing brickwork on the ground floor and use charred timber cladding on the first floor.

When completed the extension will enable the owners to enjoy their house anew and help to support their changing lifestyle.

The proposal was within permitted development rights, thereby not requiring planning permission
