The 306-seat theatre is located in the Wildern School campus. The £4.2m project was jointly funded by Eastleigh Borough Council, Hedge End council, Partnership for Schools and Wildern School. The project required close liaising between each stakeholder throughout the project programme.
The brief was to create a flexible building that could be used by Wildern School during the day and as a community theatre during the weekend and evenings. To cater for the user’s different requirements, there are separate entrances and retractable seats in the auditorium that can be used or stored accordingly. The proposal was constrained by the limited space on the campus and the layout of the surrounding buildings. To improve this relationship the ancillary accommodation is wrapped around the auditorium to assist circulation with a double height foyer linking the auditorium and the school’s existing performing arts building. To create a sense of visual continuity wood veneer cladding material was applied to the outside and inside of the theatre.
The project was completed whilst Mark was at Hampshire County Council.
